Welcome to Third Grade
Curriculum:
Third grade is a big year for students! They take on more responsibility for their learning and class work, and they also focus on their personal social and spiritual growth.
Religion classes provide a time for unity in prayer and faith development. The children learn about the weekly Gospels, along with the life of Jesus, the liturgy, sacraments, and how members of the Church can work together in service to others.
In Language Arts, the third graders work on building vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency, spelling/phonics skills, and grammar. The Accelerated Reader program gives the children an additional opportunity to develop their comprehension skills and advance in reading levels. Students work through the various stages of the writing process as well.
Math topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions as well as lessons in numeration, patterns and relationships, geometry, and measurement. Problem solving strategies are also an integral part of the Math curriculum.
In Science, the students will study and experience a variety of areas including the study of plants, animals, ecosystems, natural resources, weather, and simple and complex machines.
In Social Studies, the students in Grade 3 learn about the Midwest, local communities, citizenship, the US government, and the environment.
The students use technology resources to practice skills and keyboarding, access information, publish stories, and develop presentations across the curriculum.
Teacher Biography:
Mrs. Will:
Hi! My name is Melanie Will. I became the third grade teacher here at Saint Wendel in the 2019-2020 school year.
After graduating North Posey High School, I attended and graduated from USI with a bachelors in Elementary Education K-6 with a minor in Social Studies. Bonus fact, I also have a bachelor's degree in Business Administration!
My inspiration to become a teacher was ignited when I discovered how fun learning could be after having some wonderful teacher role models. As a teacher, I love getting to know each student and watching them grow academically and spiritually throughout the year. In my class, my goal is to keep the learning fun, rigorous, and memorable!
I have been married to my wonderful husband, Shawn, since 2019. We are blessed to be parents to our extraordinary children, Alaina and Malcolm.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing with Alaina, making Malcolm laugh, traveling, riding roller coasters, attending concerts, playing softball, playing board games, reading, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers!
Mrs. Weinzapfel:
My name is Sarah Weinzapfel. My husband, Daniel, and I have been married for 10 years. We have a daughter, Julia, who is 5 and a son, Ethan, who is 4. We love spending time in our backyard, camping, reading stories, and watching movies together.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at USI, and I have a middle school math endorsement. This will be my 14th year of teaching. I taught for 10 years at Cedar Hall Community School. Last year I was blessed to accept a position as a second grade teacher at St. Wendel. I am very excited to continue working with such a special group of students and educators as a 3rd grade teacher this year. I love creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere in my classroom. I also believe in building meaningful relationships with my students centered around compassion, trust, and respect. My belief is that these elements combined with Christ-centered teaching will ensure a successful school year!
