Saint Wendel Service Projects
Kindergarten
The kindergarten service project will benefit the Vanderburgh Humane Society. Students will learn that through providing for animals, we are caring for God’s creation by providing for animals. Our kindergarten classes will collect the following items to benefit the animal shelter: small animal treats, paper towels, medium-sized dog collars, soft dog treats, spray cheese, peanut butter, and monetary donations. Students will also have the opportunity to volunteer for Cardio for Canines and walk a shelter dog.

First Grade
The first grade students have partnered up with the Deaconess Women's Hospital. Students will pray weekly in the classroom for the NICU babies and their families along with moms on hospital bedrest at Deaconess Women’s Hospital. The students will create special graduation gifts for the NICU babies on their day that they graduate home. They will also create holiday crafts to decorate the hospital rooms for those moms on bedrest to bring holidays to them while at the hospital and brighten their days. Throughout the year they will be collecting children's books to give to families in the NICU to read to their NICU babies.

The second grade class are Prayer Partners with the parish members of Saint Wendel Catholic Church and Saint Francis Xavier Parish. This project benefits the Saint Wendel/Saint Francis community, parish members and students of Saint Wendel Catholic School. At the end of the school year, we will invite the prayer partners to Mass and small breakfast at Saint Wendel Catholic School.

The third graders service project benefits the women and children living at the Ozanam Family Shelter located in Evansville, Indiana. Ozanam provides shelter, meals, and resources for homeless women and their children. The third graders will be collecting The third graders are collecting new or gently used twin and full sized blankets, new or gently used twin and full sized sheet sets, new or gently used towels and washcloths, new bed pillows, deodorant, bath soap, and baby wipes.

The Military Service Project connects the military of St. Wendel and St. Francis Parishes to the fourth grade. The 4th grade contact active military connected to the parishes. Showing our support throughout the school year, by snail mail and email, students learn about the military career choice and appreciate the sacrifices they make for their country. We collect items (donations) from school and parish members to send to the troops, both for Christmas and Easter. We recognized the veterans of our area on Veterans’ Day by hosting a breakfast following mass, then there was a early morning military salute near the school flagpole.

Students will raise funds for protective vests for area K9 officers by collecting donations as well as writing letters to local sheriff departments and FOP organizations asking for their support with a donation.

Our 6th-grade students will engage in a project to support the homeless community by creating weather-proof, durable sleeping mats from recycled plastic grocery bags. The project involves collecting used plastic bags, transforming them into “plarn” (plastic yarn), and crocheting the plarn into mats. This initiative aims to reduce plastic waste, teach students valuable skills, and provide essential items to those in need. Through this project, students will learn about environmental responsibility, community service, and the impact of their efforts on improving the lives of the homeless.

The seventh grade class has partnered with Special Olympics of Southern Indiana/Vanderburgh County. 7th Grade will collect individually packaged snacks and drinks to donate to the Vanderburgh County Special Olympics. These snacks will be used by the athletes at their summer games which are usually held in Terre Haute. Students may also have the opportunity to volunteer at the local area Special Olympics Track Meet in the spring. Special Olympics Vanderburgh County is a not-for-profit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for ages 8 and above with intellectual disabilities. Any donations received helps athletes as they train locally to compete at local, state, national, and international Olympic-type sporting events.

Eighth Grade
The eight grade students would like to focus their efforts on the priests and seminarians in the Diocese of Evansville, the Saint Wendel community, and a local nursing home. First, they would like to do some community service in the Saint Wendel community. They would like to do small projects for the elder/disabled located within walking distance of the church. Second, they would like to make a manipulatives for the elderly who reside in a nursing home and spend an hour or so visiting the residents of the nursing home. Third, they would like to make care packages for the active priests and seminarians of the Evansville diocese. |
