Welcome to Fifth Grade
Curriculum:
In 5th grade, students will reinforce or rediscover their love for reading. Students will read and comprehend a variety of literature including fiction, nonfiction and poetry. We will also read and explore a variety of exciting novels as a class. The novels chosen have a history of drawing students in and will have them begging to read the next chapter. In Math, students will make giant strides as they master concepts such as multi-digit multiplication and division, adding and subtracting decimals, multiplying and dividing decimals, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, as well as multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
Students will also have Science, Social Studies and Religion. In Science, students will learn about a variety of topics such as the distribution of energy in an ecosystem and changes in the Earth’s surface. In Social Studies, we will start with the first Americans and work our way through time to the Civil War and Reconstruction. Alongside all school Mass twice a week, 5th grade Religion will further students’ understanding of the sacraments and continue their growth towards living as Disciples of Christ.
In addition to core subjects, 5th grade students will discover more responsibility and organizational skills. As a 5th grade teacher, it is a goal of mine to fully prepare my students for the next step in their education—middle school. Being organized and responsible will help students become more accountable and guide them into becoming successful, lifelong learners.
