Teacher Biography:
Hello! My name is Tom Johnson. I am a born and raised Westsider. I attended Resurrection Catholic School, Mater Dei High School and the University of Southern Indiana. I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana in 2015 with my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. This past May, I graduated from the American College of Education with my Masters degree in educational leadership. I have taught 5th grade for the last four years. My first two years of teaching experience were at Christ the King Catholic School, and the last two years have been at Saint Wendel. My wife, Lindsey, and I live in the St. Philips area with our one year old daughter, Avie, and our dog, Lucy.
I am a huge sports fan, and I especially enjoy football, which is why I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to coach football at Mater Dei High School. I have helped coach since I graduated in 2011. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and being outdoors. I also enjoy watching sports. I am a diehard Notre Dame Football fan. I also follow Notre Dame and IU Basketball.
I am excited to continue teaching 5th grade at Saint Wendel this year. Growing up, 5th grade was one of my favorite times in school. I am thankful for the opportunity to teach a grade that I love.
Curriculum:
In 5th grade, students will reinforce or rediscover their love for reading. Students will read and comprehend a variety of literature including fiction, nonfiction and poetry. We will also read and explore a variety of exciting novels as a class. The novels chosen have a history of drawing students in and will have them begging to read the next chapter. In Math, students will make giant strides as they master concepts such as multi-digit multiplication and division, adding and subtracting decimals, multiplying and dividing decimals, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, as well as multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
Students will also have Science, Social Studies and Religion. In Science, students will learn about a variety of topics such as the distribution of energy in an ecosystem and changes in the Earth’s surface. In Social Studies, we will start with the first Americans and work our way through time to the Civil War and Reconstruction. Alongside all school Mass twice a week, 5th grade Religion will further students’ understanding of the sacraments and continue their growth towards living as Disciples of Christ.
In addition to core subjects, 5th grade students will discover more responsibility and organizational skills. As a 5th grade teacher, it is a goal of mine to fully prepare my students for the next step in their education—middle school. Being organized and responsible will help students become more accountable and guide them into becoming successful, lifelong learners.
