Welcome to Fourth Grade
Curriculum:
Fourth grade is an exciting year for students! They are prepared to take on even more responsibility for their learning and class work, and they also focus on their personal social and spiritual growth.
Religion classes provide a time for unity in prayer and faith development. The children focus on the Goodness of God, Jesus as the Son of God, the Holy Spirit, the Church, and Social Justice in the Church. “Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard come through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)
In Language Arts the fourth graders work on building vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency, spelling/phonics skills, and grammar. The Accelerated Reader program gives the children an additional opportunity to develop their comprehension skills and advance in reading levels. Students work through the various stages of the writing process as well, and even have the opportunity to write their own book.
Math topics include Number Sense (comparing place value, equivalent fractions, and finding common dominators), Computation (2-digit multiplication, long division, and adding and subtracting fractions), Algebraic Thinking (relationships among operations, solving story problems, and using equations), Geometry (drawing angles, identifying and describing quadrilaterals, lines of symmetry, and identifying and describing angles), Measurement (using a ruler, area and perimeter, measuring angles), and Data Analysis (formulating questions, making and using line plots to solve problems, and interpreting data from circle graphs).
In Science the fourth graders learn vocabulary and concepts through their textbook readings, hands-on activities, and virtual labs. Inquiry skills are developed through the use of the scientific and engineering processes. Their curriculum also includes a combination of Life, Earth, and Space science topics. We also complete projects such as, The Great Egg Drop, The Invention Convention, and Recycle Projects.
In Social Studies, the fourth grade curriculum covers Indiana geography, early history, the American Revolution to the Civil War, and how Indiana has grown and faced some challenging times as a state. We also have some exciting projects and field trips planned that will allow the students to learn even more about our exciting state
Through the use of their chrome books and Google Classroom, the students will be able to easily use technology resources to practice skills and keyboarding, access information, publish stories, and develop presentations across the curriculum.
Teacher Biography:
Hello! My name is Katie Wolters, and I joined the Saint Wendel faculty in 2018. I am excited to return this year as the Fourth Grade teacher. I grew up on the westside of Evansville, attending Westside Catholic grade school and Mater Dei High School. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Indiana (USI) and my Masters in Education through Indiana Wesleyan. Some other fun facts about me are that I enjoy being outdoors and love spending time with family and friends.
