Welcome to Sixth Grade
Curriculum:
In 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English Language Arts, we focus on vocabulary, grammar, writing, and reading. For vocabulary, we cover 15 units of grade-level vocabulary. We focus on understanding the use and application of the words by focusing on contextual use, their relation to other words, and their use in everyday forms of media. For grammar, we cover parts of a sentence, the eight parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, punctuation, as well as capitalization and spelling. For writing, we have separate units for the major types of writing: narrative, informative, and argumentative. Students complete one major essay every quarter. They apply the writing stage for every essay, and they learn several revision skills to improve their work. For reading, students complete a unit on one class novel per quarter in order to practice reading comprehension skills. Additionally, students complete individualized reading goals through the use of AR and i-Ready.
Teacher Biography:
Hello! I am Mr. Odom, and this is my third year teaching. I am the 6th grade homeroom teacher as well as the English Language Arts teacher for grades 6-8. I also serve as the middle school speech team coach.
I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a bachelor's degree in History, an associate degree in Secondary Education, and an associate degree in English Teaching. This past January, my wife and I welcomed our firstborn, Colson, into the world! For fun, I enjoy fishing, reading, hanging out with friends and family, and walking my dog, Baxter.
