Welcome to First Grade
CURRICULUM:
In first grade we work on our reading fluency and comprehension skills. We work hard on our decoding strategies. We will learn the 6 traits of writing. We have Journals that we write in several times per week. In Math we master our addition and subtraction facts through 20. We study the concepts of money, time, flat and plane shapes and fractions. We also study Religion, Science, Social Studies, and Health. We plan and participate in several masses throughout the year. At the end of the year we will hatch butterflies in Science. We will learn the life cycle of the butterfly and record our observations in a Journal. In First Grade, we really focus on the child's self-esteem. We want them to love school and enjoy learning. They should always remember their First Grade year of school!
TEACHER BIOGRAPHY:
Mrs. Carrie Schuler
Hello! My name is Carrie Schuler. I have been the first grade teacher at Saint Wendel Catholic School since 2003. First, I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a Bachelor’s degree. Then, I received a Master’s degree from Oakland City University. I grew up on the west side of Evansville. I am married to Jeff and have four children, a dog and a cat. We attend Saint Wendel Catholic Church. I absolutely love to drink coffee, especially from Donut Bank, go on long walks and spend time with my family! I am very passionate about teaching children to read fluently. I love being able to watch the children grow with their learning during the year. I love teaching first grade!
Mrs. Allison Foury
Hi friends! My name is Mrs. Allison Foury. This is my 8th year at Saint Wendel. I have taught Kindergarten and 4th grade and helped in the 1st grade classroom with Mrs. Schuler. I live in Evansville, and I have been married to my husband Jess for 9 years. Together we have two sweet boys named Maverick, 7 and Cameron, 1. They are full of energy and so much fun! Maverick attends Saint Wendel, and he will be in 1st grade this year. We are parishioners at Saint Wendel and Saint John Daylight. In my free time, I love spending time with my family, decorating, exercising, traveling, and being outside.
I can’t wait to be back into the First Grade classroom! We will learn so much, have a lot of fun, and enjoy many new experiences together. We will become closer to Jesus and work on being Christ-like every day. I am blessed to be a part of this community, and I can’t wait to make many new memories this school year!
