Welcome to First Grade
CURRICULUM:
First grade is an exciting year full of learning and growth! We build upon the skills taught and
learned in Kindergarten to become even better readers, writers, and mathematicians. This is a
year where the children become more independent and confident in their learning. We work on
communication skills, problem solving, how to make and keep friends, respecting boundaries,
active listening, how to handle emotions, and ways to stay positive. First grade is full of new and
exciting learning opportunities and will be a year that the children will always remember!
In Language Arts, first graders work on their reading fluency and comprehension with the help
of decoding strategies. We use engaging activities to work hard on phonics with more advanced
sounds and learn many new sight words. In writing, the children will start to perfect their
sentences and by the end of the year they will be writing paragraphs and stories! To celebrate
their writing journey, we have a punctuation party! We also focus on new vocabulary words and
grammar to help develop their reading and writing skills.
Math is a time that we use hands-on activities and manipulative's for learning. The children will
advance their addition and subtraction to 20 and eventually start learning 2 digit addition and
subtraction. Other skills we focus on are money, time, place value, 2D and 3D shapes,
measurement, and an introduction to fractions. The children will work on their addition and
subtraction facts weekly.
At Saint Wendel, we are blessed to be a part of a faith based community. We get to attend Mass
twice a week, plan and participate in Mass throughout the year, attend Adoration, attend prayer
services, participate in stations of the cross, pray the rosary, and have daily prayer and religion
lessons. We also have a special class retreat to learn more about Mary and the rosary. This is a
year where they work on becoming closer to Jesus and start discussing and thinking about
celebrating 1st Reconciliation and 1st Communion in 2nd grade.
During Science and Social Studies, the classes get a chance to switch classrooms and learn
from the other 1st grade teacher. In Science, we learn about weather, seasons, the solar
system, living and non-living things, sound, and light. We even get to watch the life cycle of a
butterfly and research an animal to create animal reports and habitats. In Social Studies, we
focus on our community, becoming good citizens, national holidays and celebrations, American
symbols, rules, maps, and goods and services.

Mrs. Allison Foury
Hi friends! My name is Mrs. Allison Foury. This is my 10th year at Saint Wendel. I have taught
Kindergarten, 4th grade, and 1st grade. I live in Evansville, and I have been married to my
husband Jess for 13 years. Together we have two sweet boys named Maverick, 11 and
Cameron, 5. They are full of energy and so much fun! Maverick and Cameron both attend Saint
Wendel. Maverick is in 5th grade and Cameron is in Kindergarten. We are parishioners at Saint
Wendel and Saint John Daylight. In my free time, I love spending time with my family,
decorating, exercising, traveling, and being outside.
I love teaching First Grade! We learn so much, have a lot of fun, and enjoy many new
experiences together. We work on becoming closer to Jesus and work on being Christ-like every
day. We truly become a class family! I am blessed to be a part of this community, and I can’t
wait to make many new memories with the students and families this school year!
