Welcome to Second Grade
About Our Class:
In second grade we focus on becoming life-long readers by learning about the 4 components of reading: comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary. We work hard on learning these skills during Reading Workshop which consists of whole group mini lessons, hands-on independent / collaborative center work, and small group instruction. During Writing Workshop we become authors by applying the 6 traits of writing to all the different types of stories that we write. In Math we study addition/subtraction, place value, money, time, fractions, probability geometry, and measurement. We also work diligently to master addition and subtraction facts through 20 by becoming Ninja Fact Masters. If we master these facts, we then move on to becoming a Multiplication Ninja Fact Masters. During Science, we become scientists as we experiment with various scientific topics. We learn about our community, government, maps, and goods & services. During Religion we learn about God’s love for us. Each Friday, we write about and share God Moments with each other. 2nd Grade is extra special as we will celebrate the Sacraments of First Eucharist and First Reconciliation. And we can’t forget to mention that this is the year the students get to earn their cursive license! 2nd grade is full of a lot fun and learning!
Teacher Bio:
Hello! My name is Carrie Schuler. I have been the first grade teacher at Saint Wendel Catholic School since 2003. First, I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a Bachelor’s degree. Then, I received a Master’s degree from Oakland City University. I grew up on the west side of Evansville. I am married to Jeff and have four children, a dog and a cat. We attend Saint Wendel Catholic Church. I absolutely love to drink coffee, especially from Donut Bank, go on long walks and spend time with my family! I am very passionate about teaching children to read fluently. I love being able to watch the children grow with their learning during the year. I love teaching first grade!
